Bungay and the Eye Sax

A fine town, indeed!

We went to Bungay Balls Up this weekend. Here's how it went:

Friday:
I took the day off work so that we could sort stuff out and leave at a respectable time. Pete decided he was going to just leave work early. He phoned up at three saying that he was running late. As I had fully expected this I wasn't too pissed off. He eventually got home at about five and we were off in the car at half past. It took ages to get down there. There was no handily placed motorway to zip down. So three hours later we finally got into Bungay proper, only to realise that we didn't actually know where our particular field was located. So we drove around for twenty minutes or so and found nothing. Then we stopped a random in the street who's immediate response was 'Are you sure it's Bungay?'. He then proceeded to direct us back to where we'd just come from. So we drove round for another twenty minutes or so until we finally spotted a sign discretely hidden away in a hedgerow. This was getting on for about five miles outside of the town. Chatting with Void, Rob and Charlie later on, we discovered that the convention's full name is actually The Nowhere Near Bungay Balls Up. Which was befitting.

By the time we got to the campsite it was pretty much dark, so after saying hellos and discussing the nature of eye saxes on Jay's behalf, we put the tent up and went to bed. Zzzzzz

Saturday:
Shit, it's hot!
We woke up at seven and it was already scorching outside. We were pretty much the first people up and about (which was fair, seeing as everyone else had slunk to bed five or six hours later than us). So we went into the juggling tent and played snooker. And some random appeared and sucked his teeth at the nature of my bruised and battered ankle. Which was nice of him. Then we did some passing and I went back outside to sit and read next to the buttercups.

Spent the rest of the day chillin'. Unfortunately, most of the chillin' was done in the sun. And now I look like a lobster. So we took an impromptu trip back into Bungay to hunter-gather some sun cream. Found some, but it was ridiculously expensive. Didn't buy it. Bought nice food instead. Went back to camp, ate the food, chilled for a bit longer, realised that I was really quite badly burnt by this point, headed back to Bungay, bought after-sun and ice lollies. And porridge oats for Rob.

Chilled for a bit longer. Ate some nice vegan cuisine (in the local parlance 'stir fried noodles') sat down in the juggling tent to watch the show. Saw some quite funny stuff, including Rob doing a bit of a James Bond skit, Void being a hat-stand and a random called John doing a drunk devil sticking routine. Headed off to bed. Zzzzzzz

Sunday:
Bit cloudier. Still nice and warm. A chance for my skin to heal. Huzzah!
A day for five balls. Lots of throwing, plenty of dropping. Did even less than the day before, which was impressive. I had a bit of a mid-morning nap. It was very nice. Bundled Rob into the car a bit later on and took him to the local brewery. Very impressive until we overheard that they don't recycle their custom-made bottles. Tut tut. Saw some ducks and a mouse.

Ate a delicious mixture of cauliflower cheese and a roast beef dinner. So nice it was unbelievable. Sat in the tent and drank Guinness shandy while Pete embarked on a game of Kubb. Everyone was rubbish at it except Dave, who has a keen eye on him. I have now decided that I want my own set of Kubb paraphenalia. Did a bit of volley club practice stood in front of the mega-heater. Eventually got too hot and tired and went to bed. Pete followed several hours later. Zzzzzzz

Monday:
Oh, good God, the rain!
Got up at about half seven. Bundled stuff into the car. Home. Didn't see a soul to say goodbye to. How sad.

Bye Bungay! See you next year, for another fun-packed weekend of sitting in a field with a bunch of tramps and geeks.

What's with this "huzzah" business? I must protest. Whatever happened to the simple "hurrah"? I think you'll find it did the job quite adequately, without this pretentious replacement of Rs by Zs. Tsk.
